Matthew Bate is a multi-award winning director whose films have premiered at numerous prestigious film festivals around the world, including Sundance, SXSW, New Directors New Films, Rotterdam, HotDocs, and the Melbourne Film Festival.
Matt's feature documentary, Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure, made its world premiere in the World Cinema Documentary competition at Sundance 2011, and was subsequently selected for the 40th New Directors/New Films at the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center in New York.
Matthew's short film, I Want to Dance Better at Parties, took home the Dendy Award for Best Film, while his 2015 feature film, Sam Klemke's Time Machine, premiered at Sundance 2015 and won the Artistic Vision Awards at DocAviv and the Australian Writers Guild Award for Best Screenplay.
In addition, Matthew's virtual reality work, Summation of Force, premiered at Sundance New Frontier 2018 and won the inaugural Imagination Award at the VR Festival Amsterdam.
Furthermore, in 2020, Matthew co-created, wrote, and produced the TV comedy series, Aftertaste, starring Erik Thompson and Rachel Griffiths.
As a co-director and founder of Closer Productions, based in Adelaide, Matthew continues to push the boundaries of storytelling and innovative filmmaking.
