His professional debut was as Joseph Wykowski in the original cast of Neil Simon's Tony Award-winning production "Biloxi Blues".

This marked the beginning of a successful career in film, television, and theater, with notable roles in movies such as "One Crazy Summer", "Extreme Prejudice", "Biloxi Blues", "Sunchaser", "Infinity", "Junior", and "Walking To The Waterline", which he also wrote and directed for IFC films.

He has also appeared at various regional theaters, including La Jolla Playhouse in "The Glass Menagerie" and "The Habitation of Dragons", Pittsburgh Public Theater, and the National Tour of "Death of a Salesman" alongside Hal Holbrook.

As a writer and director, Mulhern has created two films: "Walking to the Waterline", in which he also acted, and "Duane Hopwood", starring David Schwimmer, which received critical acclaim and was showcased at the Sundance Film Festival before being theatrically released by IFC Films.

Mulhern is married to Karen and has two grown sons, Connor, a composer, and Jack, an actor. In 2015, he left acting to pursue a Master's degree in History from City College in NYC and is currently a Ph.D. student in History at Fordham University.
