Mary Duncan, a talented actress from Virginia, made a name for herself on Broadway with her lead role in "The Shanghai Gesture", garnering critical acclaim. Following her success, she ventured to Hollywood, where she landed a role in the 1931 film "Five and Ten", starring alongside Marion Davies. The two actresses formed a lasting friendship, with Davies introducing Duncan to Stephen "Laddie" Sanford, a renowned polo player and director of the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company.
