Marie-Josee Saint-Pierre, a renowned French-Canadian filmmaker, was born in Murdochville, Quebec, and currently resides in Montreal, Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Honors in Film Animation and a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Film Production from the prestigious Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University.
As a visionary filmmaker, Saint-Pierre has made a significant impact in the industry with her innovative approach to nonfiction storytelling. Her work seamlessly blends documentary and drama, redefining the boundaries of the medium. Throughout her career, she has directed numerous short animation and documentary films, including the award-winning Post-Partum, Passages, The Sapporo Project, and McLaren's Negatives, which won the 2007 JUTRA award for best animated film.
In addition to her directing credits, Saint-Pierre has also co-produced The Delian Mode, directed by Kara Blake. Currently, she is working on two mid-length animated documentary films: Femelles, an exploration of Quebec women navigating motherhood, and Jutra, a portrait of the legendary Quebec filmmaker Claude Jutra.
In 2004, Saint-Pierre founded MJSTP Films, an animation and documentary production company. Her film work has been showcased at over 150 prestigious festivals worldwide, earning numerous accolades. She has also been an esteemed lecturer on the art of animated documentary filmmaking in Europe, Asia, and Canada.
Saint-Pierre has served as a jury member for the Canada Arts Council, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, and the London International Film Festival. In 2008, she was selected as the international artist in residency for the S-AIR Inter-cross Creative Center in Sapporo, Japan, where she created the film The Sapporo Project.
Today, Saint-Pierre splits her time between creating films and raising her three daughters in Montreal.
