Maria de Medeiros is the eldest of three daughters born to António Vitorino D'Almeida, a talented pianist, maestro, and composer, and Maria Armanda Esteves. Her sisters, Inês de Medeiros and Ana Medeiros, have also pursued careers in the arts, with Inês being a stage actress and film and stage director, and Ana being a violinist, composer, and music teacher.
Maria de Medeiros' educational background is marked by her attendance at the Lycée Français Charles Le Pierre in Lisbon, where she developed a strong foundation in the arts. At the tender age of 15, she made her acting debut in her father's film, Silvestre.
As she grew older, Maria de Medeiros set her sights on furthering her education in Paris, enrolling in the Beaux Arts program at the National Schools of Arts and Theatre Techniques. However, she soon discovered a passion for philosophy and drama, and switched her major to pursue these interests.
Throughout her life, Maria de Medeiros has split her time between Portugal and abroad, filming and living in various locations. Since 1987, she has made Paris her permanent home, where she has established a successful career in the arts. In her personal life, she has married a Catalan man from Spain and has two daughters with him.
As a result of her children and her cultural background, Maria de Medeiros has acquired French nationality, in addition to her Portuguese heritage. She is fluent in six languages: Portuguese, French, English, German, Italian, and Spanish, reflecting her diverse cultural upbringing and her ability to adapt to new environments.
