Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford is the lead singer of the renowned English band Mumford & Sons, which has garnered numerous nominations for the Mercury Prize and Grammy Awards. Apart from his singing duties, Mumford also skillfully plays the guitar, drums, and mandolin with the band.
Marcus Mumford was born on January 31, 1987, in Anaheim, California, but his family relocated to their native England when he was just six months old. He attended King's College School in Wimbledon, where he befriended fellow band member Ben Lovett. Mumford went on to study classics at the University of Edinburgh, although he returned to London after his first year of study to focus on his music career.
It was during his time in Edinburgh that Mumford penned most of Mumford & Sons' debut album, "Sigh No More". He began his musical journey by playing drums for Laura Marling on tour, alongside the other current members of Mumford & Sons. Through touring with Laura and performing at notable gigs, they decided to establish the band in 2007.
Marcus' parents, John and Eleanor, are prominent leaders of the Vineyard Church in the UK and Ireland. Mumford is married to British actress Carey Mulligan, with whom he shares two children.
