John Longhurst, a renowned organist, spent an impressive three decades serving as the Tabernacle Choir's organist from 1977 to 2007. He is also credited with composing the iconic Latter-day Saint hymn "I Believe in Christ" and playing a pivotal role in designing the Conference Center organ.

Longhurst's accomplishments extend beyond his musical talents, as he is the author of the book "Magnum Opus: The Building of the Schoenstein Organ at the Conference Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints".

Born on a ranch near Placerville, California, Longhurst's early life took a significant turn when his father passed away in 1949, prompting his family to relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah. As a young man, he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Atlantic States Mission.

During the 1960s, Longhurst was an active member of the Tabernacle Choir, showcasing his vocal talents. He went on to earn degrees in music from the University of Utah and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

Under the guidance of esteemed organ teachers Alexander Schreiner, David Craighead, and Robert Noehren, Longhurst refined his skills. Between 1969 and 1977, he taught music at Brigham Young University.

Longhurst married Nancy Meldrim, a native of Syracuse, New York, in the Salt Lake Temple in 1969. Together, they welcomed five children, including one who tragically passed away shortly after birth.
