Person Biography:
Lynne Sachs is a filmmaker known for her unique approach to storytelling, which often incorporates elements of essay film, collage, performance, documentary, and poetry. Born and raised in San Francisco, Sachs developed her passion for filmmaking while studying and living in the city, where she worked closely with influential artists such as Craig Baldwin, Bruce Conner, Barbara Hammer, Gunvor Nelson, and Trihn T. Min-ha.
Sachs' early work was characterized by a feminist approach to image creation and writing, a commitment that has remained a constant throughout her career. She has produced over 40 films, as well as numerous projects for web, installation, and performance, tackling a wide range of topics from personal observations to broader historical experiences.
Sachs' work often explores the relationship between the body, the camera, and the materiality of film itself, as well as the tension between subjective perception and collective memory. Her films have been recognized with numerous awards and have screened at prestigious venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to her work in film, Sachs is also a published poet, with her first book "Year by Year Poems" released in 2019. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, filmmaker Mark Street, and their two daughters, Maya and Noa Street-Sachs.
