She began her career as an ice skater, touring with the Holiday of Ice company for a year, before transitioning to an acting career and further honing her craft through study with renowned acting coach Uta Hagen.
Lucy's acting career in New York City commenced with television commercials and off-Broadway productions, including the 1975 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Lincoln Center, where she played the role of Helena opposite Richard Gere as Demetrius. The production ran for a two-month period.
In the early stages of her career, Lucy relocated to Los Angeles at the recommendation of her agent, making her television debut in The Bob Newhart Show in 1972. She went on to secure roles in Flo, playing the title character's younger sister, and Little House on the Prairie, portraying the schoolteacher Eliza Jane Wilder.
