As a trained dancer and actress, Lombard's early appearances included roles in the BBC series Casualty and Bergerac, as well as the ITV show Capital City and the ITV movies Catherine Cookson's A Black Velvet Gown and Perfect Scoundrels: Sweeter Than Wine.
Her breakthrough role came in 1991, when she landed the lead part of Evangeline Eliott in the three-season BBC series House of Eliott, earning her widespread recognition.
Throughout the 1990s, Lombard continued to take on unique and intelligent projects, such as her portrayal of Lady Macbeth in a BBC production of Macbeth, Elizabeth Gill's ensemble drama Gold in the Streets, and the ITV series Bodyguards.
