Dominican writer, director, and producer, born in the vibrant city of Santo Domingo. After graduating from The London Film School in 2001, she embarked on a career that would take her to the forefront of the film industry. Initially, she produced TV commercials and feature films for both national and international companies, before dedicating herself exclusively to cinema.
Her film debut, the critically acclaimed "Love Child / La Hija Natural" (2011),won numerous awards, including the Audience Choice Award at the 27th Chicago Latino Film Festival, Best Fiction Feature at the San José Film Festival, and the Audience Choice Award at the 4th Global Dominican Film Festival, among others. Her second feature, "Cristo Rey" (2013),was an Official Selection at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, while her third film, "Juanita" (2018),received Official Selections from the Miami International Film Festival and the HBO New York Latino Film Festival.
As a producer, she ventured into the mystery genre with "Jupía", selected for Blood Window Screenings at Ventana Sur 2020. Her fourth film, "A State of Madness / Mis 500 Locos" (2020),was the Dominican Republic's Official Oscar Entry for 2021, marking Tonos' third film selected to represent her country at the Oscars.
A true pioneer in the field of film co-productions, she has collaborated with countries such as Spain, France, Puerto Rico, and Haiti, among others. She is also the co-founder of ADOCINE (Dominican Association of Film Industry Professionals).
In February 2020, she was awarded the Medal of Cinematographic Merit, making her the first woman in the Dominican Republic to receive this distinguished honor. Her work is characterized by a constant exploration of the Caribbean identity within the Latin context, and a firm belief in the potential of these stories to have a global impact.
