Before Lene Lovich's emergence onto the music scene with her 1978 and 1979 hit new wave singles "Home" and "Lucky Number", her existence was already deeply immersed in a passion for the visual and performing arts. In the autumn of 1973, accompanied by her partner Les Chappell, Lovich traveled to London to attend art school, marking the beginning of her artistic journey. Following her time at art school, Lovich attended multiple art schools and immersed herself in the vibrant atmosphere of the London Underground, where she also performed as an "Oriental" dancer in cabaret clubs.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Lovich took the opportunity to visit the renowned Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in his home, demonstrating her insatiable appetite for creative exploration. She continued to grasp at any artistic opportunity that came her way, including recording screams for horror films and writing lyrics for French disco star Marc Cerrone, whose sci-fi dance hit "Supernature" Lovich would later record.
Lovich's artistic endeavors also extended to working with various theater groups and short-lived musical acts, such as the pub rock group the Diversions and the all-girl cabaret trio the Sensations. Although the new wave music genre eventually disappeared, Lovich's distinctive persona has continued to have a lasting impact on the music world, inspiring and influencing a range of artists including Gwen Stefani, Karen O, Björk, PJ Harvey, and The Dresden Dolls.
