Lawrence D'Souza is a renowned Indian director, celebrated primarily for his remarkable contributions to the Bollywood film industry. With a career spanning over three decades, he has been actively involved in the industry since the 1990s.
Born in Valencia, Mangalore, Lawrence's parents, the Late Shri. Baptist and Late Smt. Piyad of Pane-Mangalore, instilled in him a strong sense of values and discipline. He pursued his education at the esteemed Kapitanio school, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
Lawrence is a devoted family man, married to Rita D'Souza, and is deeply religious, often paying homage to Mother Mary. Throughout his illustrious career, he has worn multiple hats, including production manager, cinematographer, assistant cameraman, production controller, director, producer, director of photography, executive producer, and line producer, working on a diverse range of films in Bollywood.
Some of his most notable projects include Sapne Sajan Ke, Dil Tera Aashiq, What's Your Raashee, and Fauji. Notably, Nadeem Shravan has composed music for all of his films except Dil Tera Deewana. His biggest commercial success to date is Saajan, which he has worked on with several other prominent directors and actors.
Lawrence has had the privilege of collaborating with acclaimed director Ashutosh Gowarikar on several projects, including Jodhaa Akbar, What's Your Raashee, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, and Mohenjo-Daro, serving as line producer and executive producer, respectively. He also directed the 2009 Bollywood film Sanam Teri Kasam, starring Saif Ali Khan and Pooja Bhatt in lead roles.
Lawrence's impressive body of work has earned him a nomination for the Best Director award at the prestigious Filmfare Awards, although he did not win. His career in the film industry spanned from 1984 to 2010.
Tragically, Lawrence's life was threatened in 2002, when two gunmen fired at him outside his office. Fortunately, he survived the attack, which was suspected to be the handiwork of the Ejaz Lakdawada gang, who had been sending him death threats and demanding ransom.
Lawrence's family has also made significant contributions to the film industry. His son, Rohit D'Souza, works as an assistant director, while his daughter, Roshi D'Souza, is a seasoned editor who has transitioned to becoming an independent post-producer and editor based in Dubai, U.A.E.
