Biography

Laurie Bird, a captivating and endearing actress, left an indelible mark on the film industry despite her tragically short-lived career, which consisted of only three picture appearances. Born on September 26, 1953, on the picturesque Long Island, New York, Bird's early life was marked by a passion for modeling, which eventually led to her discovery by director Monte Hellman.

Hellman, impressed by Bird's unique charm, selected her from nearly 500 candidates to portray the enigmatic and free-spirited "The Girl" in his groundbreaking road movie masterpiece, Two-Lane Blacktop (1971). Bird's remarkable film debut showcased her impressive range as she brought to life the chatty and rootless hippie wanderer, effortlessly conveying a sense of carefree abandon.

Bird's subsequent role as Harry Dean Stanton's snippy young wife, "Dody Burke White", in Hellman's bleakly fascinating character study Cockfighter (1974),further solidified her reputation as a talented and versatile actress. Her small but memorable role as Paul Simon's L.A. girlfriend in Woody Allen's iconic romantic comedy Annie Hall (1977) marked a poignant conclusion to her acting career.

After abandoning her acting career, Bird pursued her passion for photography, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the film industry. Tragically, Bird's life was cut short when she took her own life on June 15, 1979, at the tender age of 25, in her boyfriend Art Garfunkel's Manhattan penthouse. Garfunkel, deeply affected by her passing, dedicated his album "Scissors Cut" to Laurie, featuring a partial photograph of her on the album's back cover.
