Herman Kwan Hoi-San, a renowned Hong Kong actor, was born on October 23, 1925, in Guangzhou, Guangdong, with the English name Herman Kwan.
Kwan's early career began as a Cantonese opera actor in street theatre, where he honed his skills before joining the prestigious New Voice Opera Troupe (新聲劇團).
As his talent flourished, Kwan also started singing for early Hong Kong film soundtracks and eventually transitioned to acting in films, predominantly adaptations of Cantonese opera.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kwan became a household name, starring in numerous lead roles and captivating audiences with his impressive performances.
However, as Hong Kong films began to shift towards Mandarin, Kwan's career faced a setback, and he subsequently joined TVB, where he took on various roles.
Despite this temporary decline, directors and filmmakers rediscovered his remarkable talent, casting him in a multitude of supporting roles in films.
Tragedy struck in 2001 when Kwan suffered a debilitating apoplexy attack, leaving him mute and paralyzed.
Sadly, Herman Kwan Hoi-San passed away on September 11, 2006, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy as one of Hong Kong's most beloved and iconic actors.
