Kim Delaney was born on November 29, 1958, in the vibrant city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent her formative years in Roxborough, where she was raised by her parents, Joan and Jack Delaney. Her father, Jack, had a successful career at Delphi Automotive, serving as a committeeman for the United Auto Workers, and her mother, Joan, played a vital role in shaping Kim's early life.
As the eldest of five siblings, Kim has four brothers: Ed, John, Keith, and Patrick, with Ed and John being her older brothers, and Keith and Patrick being her younger brothers. Growing up, Kim was an active member of her school's cheerleading squad at John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia, where she developed a passion for journalism and dreamed of becoming a court reporter, with the intention of settling close to home.
After completing her high school education, Kim began her modeling career while still a teenager, working with the prestigious Elite agency. She continued to model in Philadelphia before making the move to New York City, where she quickly gained recognition through her work in commercials. To hone her acting skills, Kim studied with renowned acting coach William Esper in New York.
Kim's early foray into the world of television included auditions for popular shows such as Dynasty (1981) and Dallas (1978),but she ultimately lost out on these opportunities. However, her audition for All My Children (1970) proved to be a turning point in her career, as she landed the role of Jenny Gardner in August 1981, marking the beginning of her acting career.
In the spring of 1983, Kim took on an additional challenge by performing in an off-Broadway play directed by the talented Dorothy Lyman. Throughout her career, Kim has received numerous award nominations, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Diane Russell on NYPD Blue (1993).
