Biography

Kenojuak Ashevak was born in 1927 in the Northwest Territories, where her artistic journey began during her 20s as she recovered from tuberculosis.

Her remarkable artwork, characterized by its captivating depictions of birds, animals, spirits, and the essence of her Inuit culture, was driven by a simple yet profound desire to create beauty.

Following a 1962 National Film Board documentary, her reputation as a renowned artist began to flourish, with commissioned prints such as Nunavut Qajanatuk and Nunavut celebrating significant agreements within the Inuit community.

Throughout her illustrious career, Kenojuak Ashevak received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Order of Canada, as well as honorary degrees from Queen's University and the University of Toronto.
