Devorah Cutler-Rubenstein, also known as Devo, is a multifaceted artist with a career spanning over three decades. She has worked in various roles, including writer, director, producer, educator, and speaker.
Born in California, Devo earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television from the California Institute of the Arts. She was selected for a grant from the Scottish Arts Council to attend Edinburgh Arts, where she created a documentary about the unique educational setting.
Devo's early career included working at Twentieth Century Fox, where she rose through the ranks in story development. She later became Director of Story Department for Sir Lew Grade's Marble Arch productions at CBS Studios, and then Director, Literary Affairs at Columbia Pictures TV.
In the 1990s, Devo began to focus on developing projects for theater and television. She formed Cutler-Saxon Productions with Mary Saxon and produced the feature film franchise "The Substitute" for MGM, Live Entertainment, and HBO.
In the 2000s, Devo shifted her focus to documentary filmmaking. She co-produced and co-wrote the documentary "Not Afraid to Laugh" with her husband, Scott Rubenstein, about using comedy to heal breast cancer. The documentary won the Communicator Award and was nominated for a Peabody Award.
Devo has also worked as an educator, teaching production and pre-production courses at universities such as UCLA, Columbia College Hollywood, and California State University at Northridge. She has written articles for publications like MovieMaker and Scr(i)pt and has been interviewed for radio, podcasts, and print media.
In addition to her work in film and television, Devo is a published poet and short story writer. She has been a member of the Writers' Guild of America, West since 1982 and has written for a variety of platforms, including ABC, Columbia Pictures, FX, Showtime, MGM, and Live Entertainment.
Devo is currently the CEO and President of Noble House Entertainment, where she develops and produces multi-platform projects. She is also the founder of The Script Broker, a company that helps writers and other creatives get ready for the marketplace.
Devo has been recognized for her work in promoting cultural diversity and has won several awards for her documentaries and short films. She continues to work as a writer, director, producer, and educator, and is dedicated to helping artists grow and succeed in the entertainment industry.
