Karl-Heinz Rummenigge began his football career in 1963 with Borussia Lippstadt in his hometown. He transferred to Bayern Munich in 1974 for a fee of 17,500 DM, giving up a banking apprenticeship to do so. Rummenigge played for Bayern for ten years, winning the European Cup in 1976 and making his debut for the German national team the same year. He went on to play 95 times for the national team, scoring 45 goals and captaining the team in 51 matches.

Rummenigge's greatest sporting triumphs include winning the 1980 European Championship and becoming runner-up in the 1982 World Cup. He won the DFB Cup with Bayern in 1982 and 1984 and was named top scorer in the Bundesliga three times. Rummenigge also won the election for "Footballer of the Year" in Germany in 1980 and was voted Europe's "Footballer of the Year" in 1980 and 1981.

After retiring from football in 1989, Rummenigge became vice president of FC Bayern Munich in 1991 and worked as a co-commentator for international matches. He was hired by the German Football Association as team manager in 2000 and supported the national team at the 2002 World Cup. Rummenigge was elected president of the Association of European Football Clubs in 2002 and took over as first chairman of the European Club Association in 2008.

In his personal life, Rummenigge is married with five children. He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2007 and has been recognized for his enormous dribbling strength, speed, and confident shots on goal.
