Judy Sheindlin was born Judith Susan Blum in 1942 in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Jewish family with German and Russian Jewish ancestry. Her father, Murray Blum, was a dentist, and her mother, Ethel, worked as an office manager. Sheindlin attended James Madison High School, an elite public high school in Brooklyn, where she graduated in 1960.
Sheindlin went on to study at the American University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1963. She then attended the New York Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1965 and passed the New York state bar examination the same year.
After law school, Sheindlin worked as a corporate lawyer for a cosmetics firm until 1967, when she resigned to focus on raising her two children with her first husband, Ronald Levy. The couple divorced in 1976. Sheindlin then became a prosecutor in the New York family court system, where she gained a reputation for her "no-nonsense" attitude.
In 1977, Sheindlin married Judge Jerry Sheindlin and helped raise his three children. She was appointed a criminal court judge in 1982 by Mayor Ed Koch and later became the supervising judge in the family court's Manhattan division. Sheindlin was known for her toughness and harshness in her role, which earned her a reputation as a strong authority figure.
Sheindlin retired as a judge in 1996 and went on to become the arbitrator of the popular court show "Judge Judy," which debuted in 1996 and ran for 25 seasons. She also wrote a book, "Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining," in 1996.
In her personal life, Sheindlin has been married to Judge Jerry Sheindlin since 1977. She has three stepchildren and several grandchildren, including a young adult granddaughter who has provided input for her new show, "Judy Justice."
