Joy Darlene Light was born in 1931 to Shelby Jason Light and Marjorie Agee Light in the state of Ohio, marking the beginning of her remarkable journey. Her father, a Congregational minister, moved the family to various small towns in the Midwest before finally settling in North Hollywood, California in 1953, when Joy was pursuing her studies at Yankton College, South Dakota.
Joy's professional life began as a lab technician at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, where she met her first husband, William G Smith. Together, they had three sons, Wayne, Jay, and Dale, with Dale going on to contribute to animation projects at Disney and other esteemed institutions in various capacities.
Joy's second husband was Waldemar Hille, the editor of The People's Song Book, who sadly passed away in 1995.
Joy's rise to fame began when she was discovered by Laurence Thrush, the director of The Pursuit of Loneliness, while walking down the street. She delighted in the attention and spotlight that came with filming.
