Biography

Lean, distinguished-looking Viennese character actor, latterly sporting a distinguished white hairdo and a striking pair of dark eyebrows, which added to his already impressive on-screen presence. Initially, Fürst had pursued a career in law in Vienna, but his true passion lay in the world of acting, and he was fortunate enough to receive his first opportunities on stage in Canada. His subsequent move to England in search of better job prospects ultimately led him to find his niche in British films and television. Throughout his illustrious career, Fürst is best remembered for his captivating portrayals of suave, villainous scientists, often of Eastern European, Germanic, or Italian ethnicity.

One of his most iconic and enduring roles is undoubtedly that of the maniacal, power-mad Professor Hermann Zaroff in the Doctor Who (1963) episode 'The Underwater Menace' (1967),where he brought his unique brand of intensity and menace to the screen. Additionally, his performance as Professor Dr. Metz, a laser refraction specialist, in the James Bond classic Diamonds Are Forever (1971) is another standout moment in his impressive filmography.

Fürst occasionally returned to his native Austria for theatrical appearances in Vienna and Salzburg, a testament to his enduring connection to his homeland. Eventually, he retired to Bateau Bay, New South Wales, where he continued to make appearances on Australian TV soaps and in films, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of entertainment.
