Jonathan Perera, a Portuguese descendant, embarked on an unconventional career path, trading in his corporate lawyer background for a stint as an English teacher in China and South Korea. It was during his time in Asia that he discovered his passion for screenwriting, taking up the craft at the age of 30.
Perera's big break came with the screenplay for "Miss Sloane" (2016),which he wrote while living abroad. The script was discovered by his manager through a query letter in the spring of 2014, and further developed and shopped around to industry professionals in early 2015.
Despite being a relatively new writer, Perera's script made a significant impact, attracting an Oscar-nominated director and actress, securing financing and distribution, and landing a spot on the production track in less than a year. What's more, Perera was the sole writer credited on the film, a rarity in the industry.
His success with "Miss Sloane" (2016) is a testament to his unique blend of creativity, perseverance, and strategic thinking, which allowed him to navigate the competitive world of screenwriting and bring his vision to life on the big screen.
