Jojo Mayer is a renowned Swiss drummer born in the vibrant city of Zürich, Switzerland, and currently residing in the bustling metropolis of New York City. Mayer's journey as a drummer began at an incredibly young age, with his first drum set arriving when he was just two years old. Without formal training, he taught himself the art of drumming throughout his childhood, eventually breaking into the professional music scene at the tender age of 18. His big break came when he joined the esteemed Monty Alexander group, which launched him into the major jazz music scene.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mayer has had the opportunity to perform alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, including the legendary Dizzy Gillespie and the iconic Nina Simone. To achieve this remarkable feat, Mayer employs a range of techniques, including the heel-toe bass drum technique, the Moeller stroke, and the "pull-out" or "push-pull" accent, which allows him to play beats at astonishing speeds. As the leader of the live electronica trio Nerve, which he founded in 1997, Mayer has been able to explore his creative vision and push the boundaries of electronic music.
