John was born in the historic city of Edinburgh, Scotland, a place known for its stunning architecture, cultural festivals, and rich heritage. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree at the prestigious University of Edinburgh, he made the move to London, a city that would become his new home and playground.
In London, John immersed himself in the city's vibrant theatre scene, working with a variety of theatre groups and directors, including the renowned Nancy Meckler and Pam Brighton. His solo performances, which began in 1978, have since become modern-physical-theatre-comedy classics, captivating audiences around the world. These performances include "Come Again," "Troubleshooter," "Members Only," "Dirty Money," and more recently, "European Blues."
John's performances have taken him to every corner of the globe, entertaining a diverse range of audiences, from the Queen of Denmark to African Bushmen, Russian spies, German riot-police, Japanese businessmen, Chiapas Indians, prisoners, pensioners, and children. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life is a testament to his talent and dedication as a performer.
In addition to his work in theatre, John has also appeared in a number of films, including the main part in Vana Paoli's 'Lungo il Fiume' (1989). Since then, he has continued to work in both features and shorts, balancing his busy theatre schedule with his love of filmmaking.
John's achievements in film have been recognized with several awards, including the best actor award at the Brooklyn Film Festival in 2001 for his role in No Man's Land (Nina Rosenmeier). In 2009, he starred as Quenzel in Blindspot, which he also wrote with director Ad Bol, and the film won five prizes at various international festivals.
More recently, John has been working on his own short films in Spain and in workshop situations. His short film, Backtracker, won him best director and best actor at the Girona Film Festival in Spain in 2011. He then appeared in Javier Llamazares' half-hour short and won a series of prizes for his portrayal of the character Oleg, which he played in Russian.
John's most recent projects include playing a role in the magnificent Fishbone and a small role in Paradise Hills with Emma Roberts in 2018. Throughout his career, John has demonstrated his versatility as a performer, his ability to connect with audiences, and his dedication to his craft.
