John is a multifaceted actor who has worked consistently in Film, Television, and Theatre for decades, accumulating an impressive and eclectic list of roles. His recent credits include Infinity Pool (2023) at the Sundance and Berlinale film festivals, Motherland (2023) at the Toronto International Film Festival, Joe Pickett (2021) on Paramount+, and Ginny & Georgia (2021) on Netflix.
Born on October 9, 1957, in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada, John's father was a decorated World War II and Korean War pilot who was interned in a German POW camp from 1942 to 1945. John attended the University of New Brunswick, earning a Bachelor of Education degree in Literature and Anthropology. After teaching in a First Nations Mi'kmaq community in Cape Breton, John pursued his latent interest in music by enrolling in the Jazz Studies program at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.
While at St. Francis Xavier, John became involved in the thriving theatre scene and quickly gained attention in productions of Godspell and Othello. He then decided to pursue theatre full-time and moved to Newfoundland, where he honed his craft over the next few years in repertory and regional theatre. During the following decade, John performed across the country and abroad in every stage genre, from Classical to Contemporary drama and comedy.
Some highlights from his theatre career include The Plough and the Stars and The School for Scandal, directed by Ireland's Joe Dowling; Twelfth Night, directed by Canadian Theatre legend William Hutt; and the award-winning Suburban Motel, written and directed by George F. Walker.
Settling in Toronto, John made a seamless transition to television and film with the lead role of Jack Berg on CTV's new drama The City (1999). He went on to secure many more lead and guest spots, further solidifying his reputation as a gifted actor who defied categorization. Some notable television and film credits include Living in Your Car (2010); Good God! with God (2012); Bitten (2014); Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020); Workin' Moms (2017); and Transplant (2020).
John's recent feature film credits include Pound of Flesh (2015),filmed in mainland China; Two Lovers and a Bear (2016),which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; Mary Goes Round (2017),also premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; and the popular black comedy horror Ready or Not (2019).
In addition to his acting work, John is also sought after for narration and documentaries, including Canadian Geographic, Dogs With Jobs, the controversial documentary Beyond The Red Wall: The Persecution Of Falun Gong, and Raw Opium.
