Saint, a semi-retired English Professional wrestler, made a name for himself in Joint Promotions during the World of Sport Era. On June 7, 2018, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) announced that Saint would be the General Manager of their United Kingdom brand.
As a young man, Saint was an athletic sportsman, involved in track and field events, and an amateur boxer, trained by the renowned Alf Robinson, a professional boxer who owned a gym in Failsworth, Manchester. During his training, Saint would often spar with Alf's son, Billy, but instead of boxing, they would engage in wrestling, with Saint frequently coming out on the losing end due to Billy's rising star in the professional wrestling scene.
Despite having only recently debuted, Billy Robinson took Saint under his wing and trained him to become a professional wrestler. Over time, Saint's preference shifted from boxing to catch wrestling, largely due to the gym's demographics, with more wrestlers available for training than boxers.
For two years, Saint continued his training in the Robinson gym, unaware of the changes to come. One day, he was informed that he would be training at a new venue, marking his first taste of professional wrestling. However, Billy Robinson was tight-lipped about the details, and Saint only discovered the truth after a series of exhibition matches against other wrestlers, with a limited audience watching nearby, unaware that they were promoters. Following the event, some of the promoters approached Saint, offering him professional work and encouraging him to pursue a career in wrestling.
Despite having few aspirations to become a professional wrestler, Saint was convinced by prominent promoters of the day, including Jimmy Lewis, Grant Fotheringham, Danny Flynn, and Fred Whooley, that he had the potential to make it professionally. He eventually had his first match against Colin MacDonald on May 18, 1958.
Interestingly, Billy Robinson never revealed to Saint that professional wrestling was predetermined, and Saint only discovered the truth through other people, learning that the world of wrestling he was introduced to was completely legitimate and 100% straight all the time.
