John Davis Lodge was born on October 20, 1903, in Washington, D.C. He was the grandson of Massachusetts Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and the brother of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. Lodge's family was known for their aristocratic background, and he was referred to as a "thorough and thoroughly bred blue-blood."
Lodge grew up in Washington and Paris before attending the Evans School in Mesa, Arizona, and the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. He then attended Harvard College, graduating in 1925, and Harvard Law School, graduating in 1929.
Before pursuing a career in politics, Lodge worked as an actor, debuting in the world on stage in the 1920s. He played leads in Hasty Pudding Club shows and French Club productions at Harvard, and even appeared in a few Broadway productions.
In 1929, Lodge married Francesca Braggioti, an Italian-born dancer and choreographer. The couple had a daughter, Lily Lodge, in 1930. Lodge continued to work as an actor, appearing in a few films and stage productions, but eventually turned to politics.
In 1941, Lodge returned to Broadway to appear in the musical "Night of Love," but his acting career was short-lived. He then joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a liaison officer between the French and U.S. Fleets. After the war, Lodge entered politics, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1946.
Lodge served two terms in the House before running for governor of Connecticut in 1950. He won the election and served as governor from 1951 to 1954. After his term as governor, Lodge served as U.S. Ambassador to Spain from 1955 to 1961, and later as Ambassador to Argentina from 1969 to 1974.
In his later years, Lodge served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland from 1983 to 1985, and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations. He died on October 29, 1985, at the age of 83, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
