John La Zar, a native of San Francisco, California, embarked on a journey of artistic expression, training at the prestigious American Conservatory Theatre under the guidance of renowned instructors Uta Hagen, Bill Ball, Jack Kosslyn, and Paul Shenar.
La Zar's early career was marked by a notable performance as the titular role in the University of Hawaii's stage production of "Caligula," which caught the attention of 20th Century Fox studio casting agent Phil Benjamin. Benjamin approached La Zar to audition for the role of Ronnie 'Z-Man' Barzell, a deranged and debauched rock'n'roll music producer in Russ Meyer's camp cult classic "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." La Zar's captivating portrayal of 'Z-Man' showcased his versatility and eccentricity, but unfortunately, it did not lead to more substantial opportunities.
La Zar's subsequent roles have been largely minor, with appearances in films such as "Supervixens," "David & Goliath," "Eddie Presley," "Night of the Scarecrow," and "Stripteaser." However, he has occasionally landed more substantial parts, including his memorable performance as evil sorcerer Jarek in the tongue-in-cheek sword and sorcery fantasy "Deathstalker II."
La Zar has also had a recurring role as scientist Dr. Fez on the soft-core cable TV series "Click." In addition to his film and TV credits, he has acted in various stage productions, including "The Crucible," "Macbeth," "Carnival," "High Mass," "No Exit," and "Everyman."
Beyond his acting career, La Zar is a talented individual with a range of skills and interests. He is a ballet dancer, masterswordsman, and expert martial artist. La Zar currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he continues to pursue his passion for the arts.
