The Village Voice hailed Young's debut feature, Parallel Sons, as "one of the best independent films of the decade" following its premiere in the Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it went on to win Best Feature awards at the Florida Film Festival, OutFest, and Frameline. The film was subsequently showcased at over 40 national and international film festivals before its theatrical release.
Young's sophomore effort, The Reception, opened to widespread critical acclaim in 2005, having premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The Los Angeles Times praised the film as "polished, worldly, and witty," while Variety described it as "effortlessly cosmopolitan." The New York Times noted that it was "quietly ambitious and memorable." The Reception won a Best Actor Award at OutFest and received a theatrical release.
Rivers Wash Over Me, Young's third feature film, premiered as the Centerpiece at Newfest in 2009. The film went on to play at over 30 festivals, garnering a Jury Award for Best Feature from the Chicago International LGBT Film Festival, as well as a Best Actor Award from OutFest. It also appeared on several top 10 lists for 2009.
Young's most recent feature, "bwoy," starring Anthony Rapp, premiered in 2016 and is set to receive a theatrical release in 2017.
