Biography

During his national service, he had the opportunity to run three theatres, playing a crucial role in the rehabilitation of servicemen. This experience sparked his passion for the performing arts, leading him to enroll in The Old Vic Theatre School for intensive acting training.

Upon completing his studies, he received an invitation from the renowned director Tyrone Guthrie to join the company at the theatre, which was headed by the esteemed Donald Wolfit. He spent a season with the company, appearing in notable productions such as King Lear and Tamburlaine.

Following his stint with the theatre company, he transitioned to the London West End, taking on roles in a variety of plays, including Pay the Piper, The Burning Boat, The Devils Disciple, The Rule of Three, and The Happiest Millionaire.

As his acting career flourished, he began to appear in films, including Funeral in Berlin, Diamonds Are Forever, and Pope Joan. His proficiency in German proved to be a valuable asset, as he was cast in roles such as Operation Crossbow and Attack on the 'Iron Coast.

On television, he gained recognition for his portrayal of Chingachgook in the serial adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans, earning him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. He also had the privilege of taking on four distinct roles in the long-running series Dr. Who, as well as guest-starring in popular shows like Blakes Seven, Red Dwarf, and The Survivors.

Throughout his illustrious career, he has appeared in numerous other productions, including Redcap, Minder, Bergerac, The Bill, and Casualty. Interestingly, his sons, Sebastian and Daniel, have followed in his footsteps and also pursued careers in acting.
