Lawrence's parents, Joseph Lawrence Mignogna Sr. and Donna Lynn Shaw, were an insurance broker and a personnel manager, respectively. He has English, Italian, and Scottish ancestry.
Lawrence began his career in show business as a child, appearing in commercials and television shows. He made his television debut in 1982, performing a song on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and guest-starring in "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Silver Spoons."
