Biography

Joely Richardson's connection to the theatre is undoubtedly rooted in her family's rich legacy of acting. Born in Marylebone, London, England, she is the daughter of acclaimed director Tony Richardson and the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, and granddaughter of the esteemed Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, who are both legendary figures in the world of theatre. Her family's pedigree of actors is further enhanced by her niece, Lynn Redgrave, and sister, Natasha Richardson, who were also talented performers. Joely's personal life is also intertwined with the world of entertainment, as her former husband, Tim Bevan, is a producer.

Despite her family's influence, Joely's early aspirations lay elsewhere. As a child, she was fascinated by the idea of pursuing a career in tennis, but her father, Tony Richardson, had other plans. He discouraged her from pursuing tennis, and instead, Joely's path was set towards a life in the performing arts.

Joely's upbringing was marked by a unique blend of British and American influences. Born in England, she was educated at the prestigious Thacher boarding school in Ojai, California, which instilled in her a sense of being a "sort of honorary American." This international upbringing would later influence her acting career, which began to take shape in the 1980s.

Joely's early film credits include small roles in Wetherby (1985) and BBC dramas such as Lady Chatterley (1993). Her breakthrough role came in 1996 with the Disney studio's 101 Dalmatians, marking the beginning of a long and successful career in film.
