Miriam Lucille Lilygren, better known by her stage name Jo Ann Sayers, was born in the vibrant city of Seattle, Washington. Growing up, she was surrounded by the arts, as she was named after Moses' sister Miriam, a dancer. Her early life was filled with music and movement, as she danced as a child, took violin and piano lessons, and even acted in school plays.
As she grew older, Sayers' interests shifted towards the performing arts, and she attended the University of Washington with the goal of becoming a lawyer. However, she soon found herself drawn to the drama department, where she discovered her true passion. An agent spotted her talent and offered her a chance to make a screen test, which ultimately led to her brief but busy career in Hollywood features and shorts.
During her time under contract at MGM, Sayers was among the many talented actresses who auditioned for the iconic role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939). Although she didn't land the part, she went on to co-star with the talented Shirley Booth in the Broadway smash hit "My Sister Eileen." However, she left the show after a year and a half to marry and start a new chapter in her life.
After her marriage, Sayers continued to work in the entertainment industry, appearing in summer theater, radio, and television productions. Tragedy struck when she lost her second husband, leaving her a widow. Sayers now resides in Princeton, New Jersey, where she has lived for many years, reflecting on her remarkable life and career in the performing arts.
