James McMillan III, born December 1, 1946, is an American political activist and Vietnam War veteran with a lifelong passion for politics.
He is best known as the founder of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, a New York-based political party that has been the platform for his numerous electoral bids.
McMillan's political career spans over two decades, with at least six runs for public office since 1993. His most notable campaigns include the 2010 New York gubernatorial election, where he garnered significant attention for his unorthodox candidacy.
Undeterred by his lack of success, McMillan declared his intention to run in the 2012 U.S. presidential election as a Republican candidate. Although he did not appear on the ballot in any state, he suspended his campaign to focus on the 2013 New York City mayoral election, where he ran as the candidate for the Rent Is Too Damn High Party.
McMillan's political ambitions continued to unfold in the following years, with a 2014 gubernatorial bid that ultimately fell short. He announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election, but withdrew from the race on December 9, 2015.
Following his retirement from politics, McMillan unexpectedly emerged from retirement to make a fourth run for governor. However, his petitions were challenged and ruled invalid in September 2018, bringing his political career full circle.
Throughout his political journey, McMillan has remained a fixture in New York politics, earning a reputation as a dedicated and outspoken advocate for his party's platform.
