James Albert Varney, Jr. was born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nancy Louise (Howard) and James Albert Varney, Sr. His interest in theater emerged during his teenage years, as he won state titles in drama competitions while attending Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. At the tender age of 15, he took on the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a local children's theater production of "A Christmas Carol". By the time he was 17, he was already performing professionally in nightclubs and coffee houses.
