Biography

Jessica Hynes, a multifaceted writer and performer, has made a profound impact in the realms of television, film, and theatre. Born in 1972 in Lewisham, South London, she spent her formative years in Brighton, Sussex, where she would often indulge in writing bizarre sci-fi stories during her school days.

At the tender age of 15, Jessica joined the National Youth Theatre, a decision that would mark the beginning of her journey as a performer. She left home at 18 and subsequently relocated to London, where she began taking on bit parts as an actress and comedienne. During this period, she collaborated with Katy Carmichael, who would later star as "Twist" in the cult classic Spaced (1999).

Jessica's early days in London also saw her work alongside Simon Pegg on the sketch show Six Pairs of Pants (1995). Simon would later recommend Jessica for a role on the sketch show Asylum (1996),which was directed by Edgar Wright. The trio's instant camaraderie and shared passion for comedy led them to co-create Spaced (1999),a sitcom that explored the dysfunctional lives of a group of eccentric twenty-somethings.

Edgar Wright was brought on board to direct the show, which was filmed in 1998 in North London during Jessica's first pregnancy. The instant success of Spaced led to a second series being commissioned, and Jessica went on to pursue a successful film career, earning two British Comedy Awards. Her impressive work in the play The Night Heron (2001) earned her a Laurence Olivier Award nomination, while her performance in the film Tomorrow La Scala! (2002) secured a Best Actress BAFTA Award nomination.

Jessica's reunion with Simon and Edgar in the film Shaun of the Dead (2004) marked a significant milestone in her career, as she portrayed Simon's school-friend, Yvonne. The birth of her second child in 2002 did not deter her from her creative pursuits, and she continues to work primarily in film, while still writing comedy.
