Jerry Moffatt, a renowned English climber born in 1963, dominated the climbing scene in the 1980s, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. At just 18 years old, he conquered Little Plum in Derbyshire, then considered the most challenging route in the country.
During the early 1980s, Moffatt engaged in a thrilling rivalry with Ron Fawcett, vying for the title of best English climber. His partnership with Ben Moon was particularly notable, as they shattered the climbing standards of their time.
Moffatt's impressive on-sight climbs include "Chimpanzodrome" (7c+) at Saussois and "Phoenix" (7c+) at Yosemite, achieved in 1984. His remarkable feats continued, with notable ascents such as "The Face" (8a+) at Frankenjura in 1983, "Bidule" at Saussois in 1984, and "Liquid Amber" (8c, today 8c+) at Pen Trwyn in 1990.
After a two-year hiatus due to an elbow injury, Moffatt made a triumphant return to the climbing scene, culminating in a victory at the world championships in Leeds in 1989. He continued to excel, with notable ascents such as "Evolution" (8c+) at Raven Tor in 1995, "Dominator" (8b) at Yosemite in 1991, and "Renegade master" (8b+) at Froggatt in 1995.
Throughout his career, Moffatt demonstrated his versatility, excelling in solo climbing, bouldering, and hyper-exposed routes on jammers, showcasing his remarkable skill and dedication to the sport.
