Jennifer Kate Hudson was born on September 12, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois, to Darnell Donerson (née Hudson) and Samuel Simpson. She is a multifaceted talent, having achieved success as an Academy Award-winning actress, Grammy Award-winning recording artist, and best-selling author.
Although she did not win the title of American Idol in 2002, her appearance on the show brought her minor attention and recognition. She grew up singing in gospel choirs, acting in community theater productions, and touring for Disney's "Hercules: The Musical," with no formal musical training.
After being eliminated from American Idol, Hudson appeared on the show's summer tour and performed on the road for two years. She then auditioned for the role of Effie Melody White in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which was loosely based on the real-life pursuits of The Supremes.
Hudson's performance in Dreamgirls earned her widespread critical acclaim, winning numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also released two successful albums, "Jennifer Hudson" and "I Remember Me," both of which debuted at number two on the "Billboard Hot 100."
