Jeffrey Dahmer, one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States, was born and raised in Bath Township, Ohio, a middle-class suburb of Akron. Despite his childhood tendencies of cruelty to animals, he seemed to be a normal child. As an adult, he was gainfully employed and perceived as quiet and polite by his coworkers. At the time of his arrest, he was working at a chocolate factory in Milwaukee and living alone in a small one-bedroom apartment. On July 22, 1991, his apartment was searched after a young man fled and flagged down a police car, leading to the discovery of the remains of 11 young men, mostly black, Hispanic, or Asian.
