Ravi was born to a Tamil-speaking family, with his father, Mohan, being an editor and his mother, Varalakshmi Mohan, a loving parent. He has two siblings, an elder brother named M. Raja, who is a renowned film director, with most of his films featuring Ravi in the lead role, and a younger sister, Roja Mohan, who is a skilled dentist. Ravi spent his formative years at Jawahar Vidyalaya in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, where he completed his primary and secondary education.
As a child prodigy, Ravi showed a keen interest in the world of dance, and he began training under the guidance of the renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, Nalini Balakrishnan. He made his arangetram, a traditional Bharatanatyam debut performance, at the tender age of 12. After completing his education, Ravi pursued a degree in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the film industry.
Before venturing into acting, Ravi received training in acting at the prestigious Kishore Namit Kapur Institute in Mumbai. He is also a skilled martial arts expert and a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, which adds to his multifaceted personality. Interestingly, prior to his acting career, Ravi had worked as an assistant director to Suresh Krishna in the 2001 film Aalavandhan, gaining valuable experience in the process.
