Biography

Jay Hernandez was born in the vibrant city of Morelia, Mexico, and later relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he spent his formative years. His parents, Isis Maldonado, an accountant and secretary, and Javier Hernandez Sr., a mechanic, instilled in him a strong sense of Mexican heritage.

Hernandez's entry into the entertainment industry was a serendipitous encounter with talent manager Howard Tyner, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in Hollywood. This chance meeting led to his debut in the NBC Saturday morning teen sitcom Hang Time, where he played the role of Antonio Lopez, a high school basketball player, for two seasons.

After departing NBC, Hernandez joined MTV with a short-term role as Eddie, a pizza delivery guy, in the popular late-night serial Undressed. He soon transitioned to the big screen, co-starring with Kirsten Dunst in the teen romance Crazy/Beautiful, portraying Carlos Nuñez, a straight-A high school student whose plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy are threatened by his growing attraction to a self-destructive rich girl.

Hernandez's subsequent roles include Disney's surprise hit film The Rookie, where he played high school baseball team captain Joaquin "Wack" Campos, and the action-packed drama Ladder 49, in which he portrayed Keith Perez. He also appeared in the video-game-ish action flick Torque and the drama Friday Night Lights.

In 2006, Hernandez starred in Eli Roth's horror flick Hostel, a brutal and suspenseful film about two American college buddies who get trapped in a sinister situation while visiting a Slovakian hostel. The film explores the dark recesses of human nature and features Hernandez and Derek Richardson as the two American college students who find themselves in a desperate and terrifying situation.
