Jason Gray started his career in the Japanese film industry in 2001, taking on roles as a translator, journalist, and consultant. For nine years, from 2006 to 2013, he served as the Japan correspondent for Screen International. In 2011, he co-founded Loaded Films with Eiko Mizuno-Gray, and the following year, he wrote and directed the narrative short film Yukuharu, which was screened at film festivals in eight countries.
As a producer, Gray has worked on several notable projects. In 2017, he produced the feature film Magic Kimono, starring Kaori Momoi and Issey Ogata. He also produced the anthology film Ten Years Japan in 2018, which was executive-produced by renowned Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. Additionally, Gray produced Kiyoshi Kurosawa's To the Ends of the Earth in 2019, a film shot entirely in Uzbekistan that closed the 2019 Locarno Film Festival.
Gray's most recent production is Chie Hayakawa's Plan 75, for which he was also credited with co-story. The film won the Camera d'Or Special Mention in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and has been selected as Japan's official entry to the 2023 Oscars.
