Biography

Janet McTeer was born on August 5, 1961, in Newcastle, England, UK, to parents Jean and Allan McTeer. She spent her early years in York, where she was raised from the age of six. Her educational background began at Queen Anne Grammar School for Girls, which unfortunately lacked opportunities for drama. However, her interest in acting was piqued at the age of 16, when she witnessed a captivating performance of "She Stoops to Conquer" at the York Theater.

As a teenager, she worked as a waitress at the same theater, where she had a chance encounter with the renowned actor Gary Oldman. He encouraged her to apply to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA),where he had recently completed his studies. Her hard work paid off, and she successfully secured a place at RADA. Following her graduation, McTeer began her career in the entertainment industry by joining the esteemed Royal Exchange Theatre.

Her on-screen film debut occurred in the 1986 erotic thriller Half Moon Street, based on a novel by renowned author Paul Theroux. Years later, in 2000, she received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her outstanding performance in Tumbleweeds (1999). In recognition of her contributions to the world of drama, McTeer was honored with the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
