Biography

James Luisi, a native New Yorker, received a basketball scholarship to attend St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, where he studied and honed his skills on the court. Before pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, Luisi served his country during the Korean War, showcasing his bravery and dedication to his nation.

After his military service, Luisi embarked on a one-season stint with the Baltimore Bullets in the National Basketball Association, demonstrating his athletic prowess on the professional level. His foray into the world of acting began on the stage, with early roles in Broadway musicals such as "Sweet Charity" and "Zorba," showcasing his versatility as a performer.

Luisi's early film career was marked by minor roles, although his "beefcake" appeal was undeniable in his 1973 film debut, "I Escaped from Devil's Island," in which he rarely wore a shirt, highlighting his physical presence on screen. Throughout his career, Luisi primarily worked in television, with notable roles including sharing a "best actor" daytime Emmy for his portrayal of George Washington in the daytime drama special "First Ladies Diaries: Martha Washington" in 1975.

In 1976, Luisi began his four-season role as Lt. Chapman, the nemesis of Jim Rockford (played by James Garner),in the popular television series "The Rockford Files." The following year, he appeared in the short-lived series "The Renegades," playing the cop in charge of a group of street-gang members turned undercover agents, which provided a platform for Patrick Swayze, who played one of the gang members, to showcase his talents.

In addition to his work in television, Luisi also made appearances in soap operas such as "Days of Our Lives" (1965) and "Another World" (1964). After a period of relative inactivity in the entertainment industry, Luisi returned to acting and directing stage work in the Los Angeles area during the 1990s.

Tragically, Luisi's life was cut short when he passed away on June 7, 2002, after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Georgia Phillips, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and commitment.
