James Herbert, a renowned American painter and filmmaker, has garnered widespread recognition for his distinctive body of work, which is characterized by an unwavering fascination with the human form in romantic and erotic settings, with a particular emphasis on the intricate relationships between sexuality, scene context, and the human figure.

Born in 1938 in Boston, Herbert spent his formative years in Rhode Island, where he began his informal art education as a teenager by attending nude figure drawing classes at the esteemed Rhode Island School of Design.

Upon completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Dartmouth College in 1960, Herbert went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Colorado in 1962, where he had the privilege of studying briefly under the tutelage of prominent artists Clyfford Still and Stan Brakhage.
