Jack Owens, originally L. F. Nelson, was a renowned American blues singer and guitarist, whose life was marked by a mix of humble pursuits and hidden talents. Unlike many of his peers, Owens never harbored ambitions to become a professional recording artist, instead opting for a life of quiet simplicity. He spent most of his life tilling the soil, distilling and selling bootleg liquor, and operating a weekend juke joint in Bentonia, where music and revelry would flow freely. Notably, his friend and fellow blues musician, Skip James, had left home in search of fame and fortune, eventually finding a talent agent and record label to sign him. However, Owens remained steadfast in his decision to stay close to home, content to sell liquor and strum his guitar on his front porch, sharing his music with a select few.
