Biography

Irene Ryan, a multifaceted actress, enjoyed a successful career in vaudeville, radio, and film before her iconic portrayal of Granny on the popular 1962 television series The Beverly Hillbillies. Although she was not yet a household name prior to her television stint, Ryan was already an established figure in the entertainment industry, having accompanied renowned comedian Bob Hope on his famous military tours. She earned the nickname "the gal who makes Bob Hope laugh" due to her impressive ability to bring joy and laughter to the esteemed comedian. Ryan's overnight success as Granny catapulted her to fame, and she went on to co-star in the Broadway musical Pippin alongside the talented Ben Vereen.
