Biography

Next person biography:

Ingrid Pitt, born Ingoushka Petrov, was a Polish-born actress who became a household name in the world of horror cinema. She was best known for her iconic role as the seductive female vampire in Hammer Films' early 1970s productions.

Pitt's early life was marked by the challenges of World War II, during which she survived and eventually became a well-known actress on the East Berlin stage. Her stage presence and exotic looks eventually caught the attention of film executives, leading to her debut on the big screen in the mid-1960s.

Pitt's breakthrough role came in 1968 when she appeared as "Heidi", an undercover agent, in the war thriller "Where Eagles Dare" alongside Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Her performance caught the eye of Hammer Films, who cast her as the vampiress "Mircalla" in the sensual horror thriller "The Vampire Lovers" (1970).

The film's success cemented Pitt's status as a horror icon, and she went on to appear in several more vampire films, including "The House That Dripped Blood" (1971) and "Countess Dracula" (1971). Her portrayal of the bloodthirsty Countess Elizabeth Bathory in the latter film further solidified her reputation as a master of the macabre.

Pitt's horror career spanned several decades, with notable roles in films such as "The Wicker Man" (1973),"The Final Option" (1982),"Smiley's People" (1982),"Wild Geese II" (1985),and "The Asylum" (2000). She was also an active presence at horror conventions and fan gatherings, and penned several books about her experiences in the horror industry.

Throughout her career, Pitt was known for her warm and engaging personality, and her love of talking to fans about her on-screen exploits. Her fan club, the "Pitt of Horror", was a testament to her enduring popularity and cult status.

Ingrid Pitt passed away on November 23, 2010, just two days after her 73rd birthday, but her legacy lives on through her iconic performances and her dedicated fan base.
