Igor Gouzenko, a cypher clerk who gained notoriety for being the individual credited with sparking the onset of the Cold War, made headlines on September 5, 1945, when he defected from the Russian Embassy in Ottawa, Canada.
He spent the remainder of his life living in secrecy and fear of reprisals from Stalin's KGB, with his identity and location remaining shrouded in mystery.
Despite his desire for anonymity, Gouzenko did make a few public appearances, including television shows such as THIS HOUR HAS SEVEN DAYS and FRONT PAGE CHALLENGE, as well as a radio interview with American journalist Drew Pearson.
During these public appearances, Gouzenko took precautions to conceal his identity, often wearing a pillowcase or hood over his head to maintain his anonymity.
